For eskimonoise - The Median is Not the Message

quote [ As far as I'm concerned, Gould's The Median Isn't the Message is the wisest, most humane thing ever written about cancer and statistics. It is the antidote both to those who say that, "the statistics don't matter," and to those who have the unfortunate habit of pronouncing death sentences on patients who face a difficult prognosis. ]

Lots of doctors don't understand statistics. Maybe Gould's essay applies to you?

Cosmic Rays and Cloud Formation

quote [ This talk presents an overview of the palaeoclimatic evidence for solar/cosmic ray forcing of the climate, and reviews the possible physical mechanisms. ]

Talk by Jasper Kirkby, a CERN scientist. Personally, I hope cosmic rays are a significant climate forcer. Stellar combustion is so much more awesome than internal combustion!

A Planetary Voyage in F Minor

quote [ Visual summary of the NASA-JPL Voyager Mission to the Outer Planets - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune - and their Satellites, launched in 1977; intimately accompanied by the Chorale Prelude in F Minor, Ich Ruf Zu Dir, Herr Jesu Christ (To Thee I Cry, Lord Jesus Christ), BWV 639, of J. S. Bach (arranged for piano by Busoni). ]

Poignant Voyager video on YouTube. It makes me a little sad, to think of poor little Voyagers and Pioneers, all alone, passing through the heliopause and beyond.

The Best Daily WTF Ever

quote [ When the H.R. director calls to rhetorically ask “can you come to my office for a chat… right now,” the conversation that follows rarely goes well. When one gets that call, goes to the office, and then finds two uniformed officers waiting, that conversation almost certainly never goes well. ]

Why you should always get a lawyer . . .

Coolest Name Ever

quote [ Ron His Horse Is Thunder lives where his ancestors lived for thousands of years. ]

I could pretend I'm posting this because of the bullshit REAL ID garbage. But it's just that this Indian has the coolest name ever. Almost cool enough to make me wish I was an Indian, instead of the first white male in my family. (that means i get EVERYTHING, right?)

From where the sun stands today my heart shall be a little gladder to know that Mr. His Horse is Thunder still walks the land!

A follow up on Lt. General Sanchez's Nightmare (Full text of his Remarks)

quote [ THE DEATH KNELL OF YOUR ETHICS HAS BEEN ENABLED BY YOUR PARENT ORGANIZATIONS WHO HAVE CHOSEN TO ALIGN THEMSELVES WITH POLITICAL AGENDAS. WHAT IS CLEAR TO ME IS THAT YOU ARE PERPETUATING THE CORROSIVE PARTISAN POLITICS THAT IS DESTROYING OUR COUNTRY AND KILLING OUR SERVICEMEMBERS WHO ARE AT WAR. ]

LTG Sanchez spent the first half of his speech telling the press they sucked and had serious ethical problems. Funny, that part didn't get reported anywhere . . . .

Wee War

quote [ Have a little war at WeeWar.com ]

This is a fun little turn-based tactics game. Playable in your browser. Kind of like Strategic Conquest only faster paced and less tedious. And it's free. With built in ELO rankings.

More in the extended.

The Lessons In My Son's Death

quote [ Early last month my son, James Kim, died of hypothermia in a snowy wilderness in Oregon after setting out on foot to seek help for his family, who were stranded in a car. ]

Some ideas seem like no-brainers. Like easing the privacy stuff for SAR (search and rescue) emergencies. Some seem whiny, like the SAR training and road closures.

Verizon Math: $0.002 = 0.002 cents

quote [ no quote -- just streaming audio ]

A guy has a problem with his Verizon Bill. He was quoted .002 cents per KB. He was chareged $.002. Hilarity ensues when he tries to educate Verizon customer support as to the subtle difference therein.
