quote [ StarForge is a game about gathering resources, building bases, crafting anything you want, and surviving on an alien planet. Earth's star is dying and humanity transferred as much technology and resources as possible and left on a one way mission to populate another planet. ]
Anyone plan on playing this? Is it a Minecraft killer?

That said, (I think) I'd love a game that combines all my favorites. Star Control 2/Homeworld on a space travel level Minecraft on a colony building level Halo etc on a FPS defense/invasion level How awesome would that be to colonize space from travel to colonies to survival and exploration? |

If we're talking dream games, I want a sandbox Thief game with decent melee combat in a city the size of the entire Skyrim world map. |

I'm jonesing for a Thief game. One where combat isn't particularly easy - that was the point of Thief. The mistake Deadly Shadows made was that it was Thief... until you got caught, then you could kill whoever saw you and carry on with no penalties. Didn't really make sense - you could quite happily hack and slash your way through the game. |

I'd like a Star Control done by the original creators that was a sequel to Star Control 2. I don't think the formula needs too much tweaking, the 4E adventure game plus the space melee combat is pretty much perfect. The only thing that it could perhaps do would be to a) add Internet/network melee combat, b) randomise the item locations, c) modernise graphics. Even voice acting detracts from it slightly. |

Yes, of course. But it's just a remake. I've played through the game probably at least half a dozen times, so what I'm asking for is more of the same with new plot, new characters, and new graphics. That's about it really. Sadly, Disney Skate Adventure or whatever the original creators are doing now just does not interest me. It's sort of like if The Cockroaches were a decent band which had a cult following, and then became The Wiggles. Hard to see them going back. |

Unless there's a way to make my landers take less damage, I'm not going to keep playing. |

Also, you can work out roughly how dangerous the planet is going to be based on the temperature, seismic activity, and weather numbers on the planetary scan. You'll probably also want to avoid fast moving creatures initially as well. Later on, you'll need the lander upgrades to get a special item, which leads to a fairly important improvement to the Starbase. This isn't essential to complete the game, but it makes your life much easier. |

game obviously borrows a lot from Minecraft. Whether it can also add something unique and worthwhile to the sandbox crafting / procedurally generated genre will be interesting to see. |

Speaking about games, BBC had an amusing bit on the Commodore 64 turning 30 years old: Commodore 64 turns 30: What do today's kids make of it?. It's better than all those "Kids react to..." videos on youtube, but I guess it's nothing special. I liked it. |

OK, so I played it for about 5 minutes. Here's some knee-jerk reactions. - Your guy moves around like Michael J. Fox in low-grav. Standing still is somehow a challenge. -I tried to cut down a tree and get wood. I punched out a chunk, the tree fell, and I chased chunks of tree around, punching them to try and get some crafting materials, only succeeding to throw tree around. - It's pretty. And confusing. Giant, neuron-like growths all over the surface, the impressive interstellar scenery, trees and grass (???). - I got stuck in a pit. I had to do zero-G MJF-parkinsons parkore to jump out. I wanted to punch at the ditch and dig a hole out. I guess they disabled digging? Whatever. -I pressed '7' and I dropped something. Not sure what it was. I pressed 7 a bunch of times, and launched myself from the collision. Also, apparently you don't need to be near anything to place items. Items many times your size and weight. From your pocket (?!?). I also placed a spotlight on a hill. It gave me a very good look at the grass 3 feet away, uphill. Nothing more. Overall, this game is VERY alpha. Not sure I'll keep following it though. Despite being 'sandbox', it feels like there's a very big limit on what goes where and how. That's why I like Minecraft, because it deals in a static proportion that is a constant (the Block) that everything is based off of. This feels more like trying to build with lubed-up jello. |
