quote [ This social experiment, of sorts, makes a profound statement about how modern culture is so attracted to pop culture, without any real credibility needed. He dressed up like a typical celebrity and was accompanied by an entourage of two professional bodyguards, two assistants, and photographers pretending to be paparazzi. ]

It's the social commentary on people's stupid obsession with celebrities doing fuck all that makes it interesting. |

Searched the site and didn't find this already posted. Could you direct me to the original posting of this news item? I try really hard not to repost, which is why this is only my second post ever. I find social experiments interesting and have done them myself. I once "protested" an Ani DiFranco concert in Portland, OR while wearing a full bodied gorilla costume. The response I got was hilarious. |

This is bad performance art, and sort of a mean trick on the tourists in Times Square. |

Personally I don't have problems with boing boing. SE and boing boing are somewhat similar, and I think a lot of peeps just dislike sending traffic (and thus ad revenue for example) to competing sites. And, well, linking to the original story is considered polite, usually. Doesn't really matter that much to me, but alas, I've seen people getting burned for it. |

Oh, and it's difficult to search for the original story on this site as it's not linked there. |

Dunno. Is it a Gawker site? Gawker's terrible scriptwalls are worth downmodding at. |

1. None of the "celebrities" deserves any more attention than a well groomed animal, a newly-waxed car/bike or an expensive watch. So the ones fell for this silly attention-getting trick basically failed for their own collective predicament. 2. Even for the ones with such predicament, I would imagine this dousch being far less attractive than any possible objects mentioned above. |

Heh. Nothing draws a crowd like a crowd. Lately I've been thinking it might be fun to start a Sumptuary Society--a club devoted to dressing "above one's station" and hanging out in posh hotel lobbies, fancy restaurants, etc. |

Ron Cockerham did this back in 2006. If you're not familiar with his site, it's probably worth checking out. I've enjoyed his creative mischief for many years. Too lazy to do the HTML on my phone for a clickable link, so: http://www.cockeyed.com/pranks/paparazzi/paparazzi01.shtml |
