quote [ The past several weeks have made one thing crystal-clear: Our country faces unmitigated disaster if the Other Side wins.
[politics] [by rangerx@11:28pmGMT] [+10 Funny] No reasonably intelligent person can deny this. All you have to do is look at the way the Other Side has been running its campaign. Instead of focusing on the big issues that are important to the American People, it has fired a relentlessly negative barrage of distortions, misrepresentations, and flat-out lies. ] |

I don't think so, Republican supporters can read this and think that The Other Side refers to Democrats. The real joke is how shitty politics is. |

The thing about this article is it doesn't say Democrats and Republicans, just My Side and The Other Side. Anyone can read this and think they are talking about Their Side. In my opinion this sentence gets to the meat of the matter: This just shows you that the Other Side lives in its own little echo chamber and refuses to listen to anyone who has not already drunk its Kool-Aid.The ironic thing is this article is written in such a way that all it is doing is bouncing off the walls of said echo chamber. |

What's up with the Sneetches? That story was about discrimination. Would a more apt Seuss story maybe be The Butter Battle Book (hating the "other" because of a meaningless difference in ideology)? In any case, I hate this type of "all politics is the same shit" satire. There is plenty of corruption and a lot wrong with the democratic party, but at least they haven't gone full retard. If this is more of a commentary on the zealots on either side of the political spectrum, then I guess it's okay, but I don't even think that is fair because the ratio of republican and democratic fanatics is not balanced. |

At the moment, in the US, I'd agree with you. Most of the time, a campaign for the top spot of a nation generally boils down to "The cunt we choose to represent our party is slightly less of a cunt than your cunt" (that was certainly the case in Australia's last election). Obama is the first world leader I've seen in a while who actually seems like a cool guy to hang out with, rather than some narcissistic douchecannon who will say and do *almost* anything for the job. Come to think of it, Romney's theme song should be Meatloaf's "I Would Anything For Love (but I won't do that)". |

Honestly, while Gillard wouldn't have you thinking "she's cool", you could at least have a human conversation with her. Abbott is just a scary glassy-eyed motherfucking cunt. I never liked Howard's politics, but you could at least have a civil conversation with him if you had to. Abbott? Never. |

Sneetches = Google images search for ~ us them ~. I am inherently lazy and frequently stoned, so please forgive my lack of perfect pictorial relevance. I echo sanepride's reasons for generally shunning the republitards due to science denial, and idiocy like the recent legitimate rape debacle. Again generally speaking, I tend to focus on issues and if possible voting history. Group thinking frightens me. |

The really annoying thing about US politics is that because the system only really allows two parties, it generates the idea that there are only two positions on any issue. Having a multi-party system at least gives the impression that there's something other than a binary choice. |

I get the attempt at humor. But it just perpetuates the "both sides are equally bad" trope and, to some extent, "two sides to each issue" myth. Sometimes there are more than two sides, as was mentioned before in these comment. But sometimes there really is a right side and a side wrong. Examples: * While there is extremism on both sides, only one side has shot a political candidate in the head. Only one side has killed doctors. And only one side has had major political candidates threaten armed revolution. * Only one party has advocated torture. * Only one party has disclosed the secret identity of a intelligence officer, putting her life and the identities of hundreds of operatives in peril, in order to bully a political opponent. Sometimes there is "one side" and "the other side" and they are two equally valid opinions. But we can't forget that sometimes one side is good and the other side is evil. Because when we let the "both sides are equally bad" trope win, it just means that people won't vote. And to bring out an old platitude of my own: sometimes all it takes for evil to win is for a good man to do nothing. |

I see it more as a mocking, rather than perpetuating, piece. The sad truth is that most partisan positions can be boiled down to just this. But it is because it is true that it is funny. Pointing out this truth is the making of the joke. |

I see your comment more as a ignoring, rather than bothering to fucking read, asmithee's piece. The sad truth is that he just pointed out why your position has its head up its ass three furlongs deep, and here you go repeating that stupid shit. Why the hell you thought it was a good idea to reply to him when you clearly didn't read it at all is a mystery for the false equivalencies. I mean ages. |

I like to point out the one side which continually, aggressively, denies science and scientific evidence in favor of narrow economic self-interest and political ideology. But my big complaint about this essay is that it's obvious, unoriginal, and at its core disingenuous. |

to be fair, no 'side' has shot people and killed doctors....those were crazy people who happened to identify as repubs. As much as I hate 'em, saying republicans en masse were responsible for those tragedies is like saying muslims were responsible for 9/11. True about the torture and disclosure of intel officer tho....also, one side doesn't believe women should be able to have access to many reproductive rights, and that gays should be oppressed as well. |

The Simpson's "THAT'S THE JOKE" should have been posted after this comment. You are DOING the thing the article is deriding. Thanks for playing. The original article was from a newspaper. The one linked here (and several other places I saw it) came from Reason. Which is home to a particular breed of lite-libertarian. There's the unspoken agreement from them that BOTH "choices" in a D/R world are pretty much fucked. The article's is not about making the two equitable - it's about the basic level of discussion and fingers in ears hypocrisy of discussions one finds on the subject. |

As much as I hate the two party system and it's consequences, and I honestly believe over the course of the last 40 years both parties have had an equal hand at fucking things up, we choose the lesser of the two evils when we only have two to choose from. The left is "better" than the right. Period. Oh yeah, and it's a dumb attempt at humor, and should be targeted at 12 year olds. But then again, it's Reason Magazine, a libertarian media outlet founded by a libertarian. You can pull the wool over a 12 year old. sorry |
