Evidence of Plate Tectonics Discovered on Mars

quote [ Now, a UCLA scientist has discovered that the geological phenomenon, which involves the movement of huge crustal plates beneath a planet's surface, also exists on Mars.

"Mars is at a primitive stage of plate tectonics. It gives us a glimpse of how the early Earth may have looked and may help us understand how plate tectonics began on Earth," ]

JOECAM would love this stuff

I wonder when we'll find evidence they once had flying cars. Lucky Martian bastards.

Wait till we discover this is where the reptilians come from.

What they're proposing is that the core is still active.

Start the reactors!

I thought that was thought to not be the case due to Mars not having a uniform magnetic field?

I thought so, too. But the mention of Mars at a primitive stage of plate tectonics rustled my jimmies.

Either the planet is dead, or Mars is too small that it's still in the process of pulling everything under the crust into the core.

The magnetic field is not possible without a liquid core.

When I was at school, our science teacher told the story of the time she caused the guy who came up with Plate Tectonics to fall off his bicycle, as he cycled at high speed onto the grass to avoid her, on Parker's Piece in Cambridge.

When she was young and embarking on a career in science, I wonder if she thought that would be her most important effect on the world of science. Not that I've ever done anything more significant than that. I suppose I could always go back to Cambridge and punch-out Stephen Hawking.

Or...you could be non-violent and give him a hand-job instead. He would probably appreciate that.

I know I would

Love the optomistic slant. Perhaps more appropriately

'Mars is in its final stages of demise. It gives us a glimpse of how the Earth will look in maybe 50 years.'

It was that bit that made the article so interesting, and I'd take the word of the scientist whose spent years studying it over yours.
damnit said @ 1:26am GMT on 16th Aug
That bit interested me. We're not actually seeing a dead planet. Just one that is still forming. We can still terra form it.
