quote [ In 2010, Iran's nuclear facilities were infiltrated by Stuxnet, the centrifuge-wrecking malware allegedly cooked up by the US government. Now they seem to have been hit again by a bizarre attack forcing nuclear plant workstations to pump the song Thunderstruck by heavy metal band AC/DC through the speakers at full volume. ]
I THOROUGHLY APPROVE OF THIS SHIT

If only this were true things would be a lot simpler. Recent civil unrest gives the impression that there is popular discontent with the regime, but the dissent is concentrated mainly among the educated elite. Unfortunately this demographic is nowhere near a majority of the population, who are largely poor, illiterate, devout and largely loyal to the Islamic republic. Yes there is a lot of discontent with Ahmadinejad, not only among the populace but among the higher leadership, but it is believed that in general most Iranians retain loyalty and faith to their government as a whole. |

Sure, but things will change by themselves over time if the US and Israel don't interfere. It's not like Afghanistan where they try to shut down schools for girls, or Iraq where the elections are rigged, or Saudi where there's a massive gap between rich and poor. Iran, with encouragement, could be a more modern, democratic nation. You'd have to accept however, that their democracy wouldn't be like the US and that their interests wouldn't always align with US or NATO. If the CIA hadn't deposed of Mosaddegh, it's likely that Iran would be much friendlier to the West now and that there would be a more moderate religious leadership which had less of a role in politics. Also, while poor, rural people support the religious conservatives who run the country, the same could also be said of the US. |
