quote [ Her name is Anahita, and she is the 28-years-old voice and vitriol behind Janaza, Iraq's very first female-fronted, black-metal band. Allow that notion—Iraq's very first female-fronted, black-metal band—to sink in for a moment. ]
I never thought I'd even consider this, but Black Metal seems to be a step in the right direction. I am really pulling for this woman. She is brave to say the least.
"Her first recording, Burn the Pages of Quran, boasts five distorted, primitive tracks that altogether run just shy of an unlucky 13 minutes. She, along with a handful of other acts hailing from the Middle East, are repurposing black metal's historically anti-Christian ferocity to rail against Islam. In doing so, these bands are serving up another example of how art and dissent can intersect in a region where dissent can sometimes have deadly consequences. |

Though black metal isn't my thing (I'm more of a thrash and NWOBHM kind of guy) I'll throw up the horns for these people. Can't get any more brutal than risking public execution for your music. |

Indeed. In Norway, it took some acts of arson and murder to get people properly flustered, but then eventually subsided and black metal is now a recognized part of their culture. In the Middle East, you can get killed for simply saying "I don't want to be Muslim anymore", to say nothing of screaming blasphemy at the top of your lungs. |

Iranians are actually pretty westernized, despite the religious extremest terrorist freedom-hater image that US the propaganda machine always portrays. Yes they have a conservative religious minority that seems to have an unequal share of power in the political process, if that sounds at all familiar. But really they're pretty similar to us 'Mericans. We're just forever pissed because some of their youthful rebellious protestors took the US embassy hostage about 9000 years ago. Really it's time to let bygones be bygones. |

Surely people in the arabic world are only listening to this stuff with headphones on? ... otherwise they'd be off their heads! (pun intended).
