Publicly Setting an Example

quote [ More than 40 lawmakers have volunteered to undergo circumcision.

20 legislators underwent the surgery on Friday.

Chebundo was the first, he said the procedure was "safe and pain-free."

"I didn't feel a thing. I can confidently urge all men to go through with this," he said. ]

Interesting article and neat to see politicians taking it seriously. You may want to include in your comments that there are penis photos in the extended.

Female genital mutilation most often involves the removal of the entire glans clitoris. This structure is homologous to the male glans penis, or "dickhead." A bit different from male circumcision.

(Although it should be noted that there are practices which remove only the clitoral hood, roughly homologous to the foreskin).

I'm not trying to start an infant-circumcision-is-it-good-or-bad flamewar (I'm against it), but please don't draw a false equivalence.

Dickhead.
GordonGuano said @ 10:36pm GMT on 23rd Jun
Given that in Zimbabwe the high-tech doctors use a broken bottle instead of a sharp rock, the operations are likely more analogous than you think. And removing healthy, functioning tissue is pretty much the textbook definition of mutilation.

Hey, he can't be wrong all the time.

www.senslip.com

The SenSlip is NOT to be used for penetration.

The SenSlip is not a sex toy. Your man puts it on in the morning and takes it off at night, just like his shirt.

It is available in Caucasian Pink and now in a Mid-Brown color.

The SenSlip can provide for you:
• A flexible, protective and comfortable retractable cover for the glans
• An affordable artificial foreskin which is washable and semi-disposable
• Immediate and instant protection of the glans from underwear and the elements
• A program for reversing lack of sensitivity in the glans
• A deeper and more enjoyable orgasm
• Natural dekeratinization of the glans (thinning of the existing calloused skin)
• A softer and smoother glans which is more sensitive to touch and feel
• An artificial foreskin which gives the appearance of an uncircumcised penis
• A feeling of warmth, security and self-esteem.

A Cochrane meta-analysis of studies done on sexually active men in Africa suggests that circumcision reduces the infection rate of HIV among heterosexual men by 38%-66% over a period of 24 months, and studies have concluded it is cost effective in sub-Saharan Africa. The WHO currently recommends circumcision be part of a comprehensive program for prevention of HIV transmission in areas with high endemic rates of HIV.

I'm going to remain skeptical about this until someone can give me a plausible reason why circumcision would reduce infection rates. If anything, it seems like evolution would not favor giving us a foreskin if it aided in the transmission of STDs. Anybody?
cb361 said @ 7:47pm GMT on 23rd Jun
Well, it's apparently true. Why would circumcision decrease a man's risk of contracting AIDS? has a bunch of stuff I don't understand. We had an argument about this on SE when the research was first published.

My position is that (I gather) it's quite hard to get HIV, so I assume that a lot of the people who get it through sex are having not just unsafe sex but a lot of unsafe sex. Cutting off your foreskin might help you get lucky if you have unsafe sex with an infected partner once or twice, but if you're going to keep having unsafe it then you're going to catch HIV eventually.

So I think this will probably just give recipients a false sense of security ("They say if I get circumcised I'm safe to have as much sex as I like!") and could actually make things worse. Plus, it doesn't help women if you're a man who's already contracted AIDs.

So yeah. It might help in a few cases, but it's not going to save Africa from AIDS.

For this reason, and the fact that condoms offer much higher protection anyway, I tend to put this whole thing down to the pro-circumcision lobby, who consider circumcision to be a good thing in itself and see this as an excuse to push their own agenda.
sanepride said @ 7:51pm GMT on 23rd Jun
Seems like a basic hygiene issue. In developed countries this wouldn't be a problem, but if you live in a place without ready access to showers, etc, I'd expect you'd potentially create an environment that could more readily foster microbial husbandry.

As weak the evidence is, it appears to only effect Herpes, HPV and HIV. Herpes doesn't kill you nor prevent procreation, HPV only causes cervical cancer(one of the many types) in women and warts. Neither of these appear to reduce the chances of procreation. HIV has only been around for a few hundred years. None of these seem to be significant evolutionary forces to cause any change in an organism.
