I was blown away, and I have so more respect for the man.

Good question, but I was always curious why he dropped off the radar, and fucked off to Africa for a while. Nice to see the drug rumors were false, and really it was just the insanity of Hollywood got to him. I would think he is just chilling on his farm these days. |

He's still doing standup, it's just that he does these "secret shows" which don't really advertise that he's going to be performing so that there isn't a whole swarm of rabid fans turning it into some big deal that overshadows the comedy and makes Chappelle uncomfortable. |

Chappelle says it wasn't a nervous breakdown but shutting down production of a very popular show (ending all the jobs of the people who work there) then flying off to Africa unannounced all because a camera guy may be racist because of the way he laughs doesn't scream "rational human-being". |

I was agreeing with you up until you said bit after flying off to Africa. Perspective. It is impossible for me to really understand, really, celebrity and what comes with it. I could (but am not) be the most talented person in the world. Would I be willing to sacrifice myself on the altar of gossip to give a gift that I (dont) have? If I had it... would I be happier. I watched the whole vid, and a lot of people who comment will see the title and skim the responses and reply. Thats just how shit works. You got to cut some people some slack. Especially when you really cant comprehend what they are having to go through. I dont fault Dave, he saw people he defined as 'STRONG' and understood that to succeed you must have a will and a drive and a desire. And talent. And luck. And a FUCK YOU attitude. One of his most famous and best on the show was about keeping it real. I think Dave figured, 'this shit ain't real, Im out" I especially liked how it ended. When it was just Dave. I'd buy him a beer and smoke a bowl anyday. shit. long reply sorry |

If you want a point to that mess it is that celebrity is not always a blessing. And yes, 50 million dollars is great but not if it kills you inside and out. People think about the money so often they forget that there are people who paid the money thinking they bought at least a part of you. Im cool being anon and saying my silly things. |

Let me put it this way: If you were the CEO of a major corporation whose daily operation absolutely depending on you being there and you suddenly, without notice or explanation to anyone including your business partner and wife, flew off to Africa to stay for an unspecified reason and amount of time how would it be viewed? I like Dave Chappelle. I think just about everyone does. I have a DVD set of Chappelle's Show on the shelf a few feet away. And I think that like is what pushes everyone to make excuses for his behavior. It walks like a duck and quacks like a duck but we all pretend it's not a duck. |

Well, if you see yourself becoming something you hate or despise you should stop. The fact that he did this and gave up a lot of money says a lot about his principles and his thoughts on race. Some things are worth more than money to Dave Chappelle. Like his integrity. He should be congratulated and applauded for standing up for what he believes in. Not everyone would do the same. |
|
hackiavelli
said @ 5:47am GMT on 23rd Jun
It was his show. Dave could have easily revamped parts he wasn't comfortable with. Instead he just ran off without telling anyone. Can you imagine how horrible that would have been for the people whose livelihoods were depending on Chappelle's Show? |

Yeah, Santa Ana's a bit of a cultural oasis out here. There's lots of cool art things in the city's downtown, and a sort of disconnected, inter-city art scene has crystallized around Cal State Fullerton / Santa Ana's ArtWalk. But yeah, the rest of the county is paved-over strip malls and soft jazz festivals, though. |
