quote [ Lolita City, a child pornography site run on over a concealed “darknet,” has been taken down by Anonymous members, and account details of 1,589 users from the site’s database were posted as evidence. ]
Anonymous doles out their own personal brand of justice by taking down a bunch of kiddie porn sites. Anonymous continues to be anonymous in extended.
Anonymous digs through rich people's trash.

I have an issue with this kind of vigilantism (if you can call it that). This action defines the very concepts of "pointless", "futile" and "counterproductive"; by defacing some "porn" sites, Anonymous have only managed to harden and upgrade these kind of sites' defenses. Since it's on the TOR network, they didn't grab any IP addresses. So what if they take down Lolita City; it'll come back. Unless Anonymous managed to get some really nasty details on those users (which I severely doubt, given the nature of the sites), nothing will come from this except harder to take down sites in the future. Unfortunately. |

I don't, obviously, condone child pornography and I think it's delightful that things continue to happen against it, I do believe there are better ways to approach this. I know that there were a few Swedish hackers way back in the dark ages of the internet that used to drop information to the police whenever they cracked a CP circle (I know some of the hackers that were active). I realize that "infiltrating" a site/CP community is rather disgusting, but defacing or DDoSing a site won't bring anything but slight annoyance to them. You need to dig deep enough to hand police some real information. Maybe Anonymous did, but until I see results from it, I'm going to remain skeptical that this was an efficient way of combating CP. |

I have to disagree with you on this one azazel. I've read your follow-up post, and obviously see what you're saying, but maybe this scares an individual to the point that they decide that the benefit they get from it is not worth the risk of being found out. Even if this is only one person, it makes a difference. Also from what I understand, Anonymous is about creating chaos. Decentralization is the key to their success and these efforts all point to a common theme: if you are doing something wrong, you can be outed, you can be hacked, and you can suffer some repercussions. I love the fact that they are hitting the "low hanging fruit" of the dregs of society. Might as well take them out at the knees when aiming at the bigwigs as well. |

These "dregs of society" and "bigwigs" you speak of are not necessarily mutually exclusive; it is possible for the CEOs of large corporations to indulge in the odd bit of child porn too. |

Will any pedophiles go to jail because of this? No. Will kids be more safe? No. So what was the point? Well, IMO it was brilliant. Most people are stupid when it comes to internet/technology stuff. They hear "Anon hacked kiddie porn sites" and don't think about the the question of if anything good really happened. Instead they just get excited and say "Anon is saving the kids. Think about the kids!" It's a great PR move. Now when they hear "Anon is attacking BoA" the won't be upset at the bad hackers, instead they will associate BoA with pedophiles. Ok, this PR trick won't work for everyone, but it will work for a lot of stupid people. |

Were they going to go to jail anyway? The police don't have the technical or legal capability to do this, but they can start looking at all those names that were released. Especially if some hard drives end up in their garbage. |

This is a good headline, but it really doesn't mean anything. >account details of 1,589 users from the site’s database were posted If you look at the dump, you'll see it's just profile information. Usernames, posting stats, join date, etc. They didn't get the password hashes (which were stored remotely) or any other information that could be used to identify, say, pedobear69. >By taking down Freedom Hosting, we are eliminating 40+ child pornography websites That's great, except... >The Tor network was heavily used in Egypt earlier this year by dissidents to get around the Mubarak regime’s Internet shut-down, and is used by bloggers in Syria to communicate with the outside world. I guess all the oppressed people around the world will have to wait. There are more pressing matters at hand! Such... as... what exactly? Freedom Hosting or something similar will be back eventually, and so will the sites. Likely more secure than before. Child abusers will still molest their children regardless of whether there's a convenient place to upload it to. For profit child pornographers (a MAJOR problem) are completely unaffected by this, and are probably laughing since Lolita City and other free image dump sites steal their content and endanger their operations by exposing their media to the untrusted public. In summary, this doesn't help victims of child abuse. It won't stop future abuse and no one responsible will be caught. All it does is temporarily inconvenience low-level pedos who are guilty of a thought crime... which is odd considering: >Anonymous: goal of promoting internet freedom and freedom of speech |

What I find worse is that now 1,500-odd pedos have been flushed out of Lolita City, which is a known site and probably monitored to some degree (at least scanned for new material, possible victim identification) to some other new site that's going to spring up, the address to it passed covertly and probably better protected than before... |
