CDC confirms waterborne infections. Cases present in FL, Louisiana and Virginia. The thumb is not a depiction of real events... for now.

Here's the part of the article that caught my eye, to be honest: The amoeba is not a parasite. A human is an "accidental end point for the amoeba after it's forced up the nose," Yoder said. It does not seek human hosts. But when an amoeba gets lodged into a person's nose, it starts looking for food. It ends up in the brain and starts eating neurons. So how long until this strain of amoeba realises there are things called humans, and start pursuing us not simply for brain tissue, but our delicious neurons? |

This is what caught MY eye: Health officials usually record about two to three cases in a given year -- 1980 was the highest with eight deaths. This isn't a new thing. |

Yeah I just edited my post to reflect this. Oh well, something else that I now know I've been living with my whole life which could kill me in a fashion worthy of a 1950s horror flick. |

That's why we boil and add chlorine or fluorine in our water system. |

Apparently you're far more likely to get sick and die from the nasty germs that can be found in a typical swimming pool. |

Yeah, I remember being told about this as a kid. I was in boy scouts, and we were camping at some place with a lake. Everyone was taken to go swimming, at which point we were told not to put our heads underwater, since there were known to be amoebas in the lake that could get in through your nose and eat your brain cells. I'm still amazed that I was the only one there for which that was a deal breaker. |
