Edit: So I did some quick research on the amoeba and it has killed before! 26 in the US since 1995, and several hundred worldwide since its discovery in Australia (big surprise there) 50 years ago.

Here's the part of the article that caught my eye, to be honest:

The amoeba is not a parasite. A human is an "accidental end point for the amoeba after it's forced up the nose," Yoder said. It does not seek human hosts.

But when an amoeba gets lodged into a person's nose, it starts looking for food. It ends up in the brain and starts eating neurons.

So how long until this strain of amoeba realises there are things called humans, and start pursuing us not simply for brain tissue, but our delicious neurons?

Yeah, I remember being told about this as a kid.

I was in boy scouts, and we were camping at some place with a lake. Everyone was taken to go swimming, at which point we were told not to put our heads underwater, since there were known to be amoebas in the lake that could get in through your nose and eat your brain cells.

I'm still amazed that I was the only one there for which that was a deal breaker.
