Senator questions benefits to ‘adult baby’

quote [ Senator has asked the Social Security Administration to investigate how people who live their lives role-playing as “adult babies” are able to get taxpayer-funded disability payments — after one of them was featured on a recent reality TV episode wearing diapers, feeding from a bottle and using an adult-sized crib he built. ]

Hours before President Barack Obama led the nation's Memorial Day observances at the Tomb of the Unknowns, three members of the Westboro Baptist Church were challenged by others who disagreed with them -- including members claiming to be from the Ku Klux Klan.

I'm not talking about truly mentally ill people. I'm talking about people who are gaming the system. And by the way I didn't name it "crazy money" that is what it is called on the street by people who are more than aware that people play crazy to get a check.
I am or I was a mental tech and have worked for the state and there are a lot of people who desperately need the help they are getting but to get all upset because there are some people who know that it is easier to fake depression and rack up a few suicidal threats to back it up than look for a job, is not very realistic.
RhesusMonkey said @ 12:04pm GMT on 31st May
It is a complicated topic - how do you determine the % of people who are committing fraud versus those that the program actually actively supports? And when you do determine the % fraud, once you total how much has been taken compared to overall government spending, does it even matter?

Depression can be very hard to understand for someone who does not have it and who has not lived through it / with someone who has lived through it. However, in all cases the assumption should be that the person receiving benefits should be "getting better", and that to determine this they should be accountable for meeting specific milestones or goals, otherwise funding is cut off.

In Ontario, one of the (very few) positive things to come out of our last Conservative government was "Work-fare" versus "Welfare", that meaning you needed to demonstrate you were actively seeking employment to receive unemployment benefits.

I personally know people who have defrauded the Ontario government for child support benefits and income taxes - people (a couple) who have several children together, but they were not married and did not claim taxes as if they were a couple (since you get more back as an independent); the mother with four dependants then also received support payments since she was a "single mom". Mind you, she had at least one of the kids because she was a) arrested for wire fraud / passing bad cheques and going to jail and b) was "told" that she could stay out of prison if she were pregnant - didn't work so well for her there. The couple eventually got married, but there was much speculation they only did it because they wanted to receive cash (typical of asian weddings to give money in envelopes vs physical items).

For people like that I'd say: Fuck these guys, toss them in jail and give their kids to social services. But for another friend of mine, who is a single mother with one dependant that has a full-time job and makes a pretty good salary, I would say those benefits are still necessary for her to be able to afford day-care to be able to attend said full-time job. There has to be balance to these services, and I'm sure we would all want Fraud to be weeded out, but the costs of policing it are likely on the same order as, if not more than, the costs lost to Fraud - when it becomes economical for the government to police itself here, they will.
chold_numa said @ 1:24pm GMT on 31st May
You'll never get rid of social security fraud. As long as there are big complex systems that hand out money with insufficient regulation/enforcement/assessment etc, there'll be someone trying to defraud it. Much like people cheating on taxes, companies cheating on taxes and politicians standing for election.

Putting kids in foster care is a bit callous unless harm has been proven. Kids are *probably* better off with their parents than with the foster care system (which is also probably rife with problems given that there isn't enough money to run assessments/checkups - in Australia at least, ymmv).

It'd be best for people receiving social security payments not to have children at all. Otherwise you'll end up with generations of people used to receiving these payments. Public education (again, underfunded) is probably the best way out of this. Give the kids at least a chance to move on in society.

As for the cheats, I say give them forced community service. If they have jobs and are caught receiving payments they're not entitled to, garnish their salaries until the amount they've defrauded has been paid back. Hell, I say the government should start handing out a reward for information leading to the conviction of someone defrauding the system.
