quote [ Set to debut in October alongside AMC's annual "Fearfest" event, the series follows a police officer who leads his family and a group of survivors across the country in search of a safe home as zombie hordes dismantle society. ]
Vid is the director (Frank Darabont) having a nerdgasm. More Walking Dead stuff in extended.

Anyone else getting a little tired of zombies? We're about due for another implausible doomsday scenario to obsess over, aren't we? I nominate gray goo. THERE'S a hopeless, "only a matter of time before you're comsumed slowly and painfully, hide out in a building with a rag-tag bunch of survivors and do your best to futilely prevent your inevitable doom" scenario I can get behind. |

As a wise man once said, zombies are popular because they're just people that it's ok to kill en masse. The same cannot be said of grey goo, though it has its own merits. |

Yeah. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but a grey goo movie would have the exact same tired characters in it that you see in every zombie movie, but the action scenes would be boring as hell. Also, more expensive. |

Of course, if you want zombie apocalypse style shock value, check out Garth Ennis' Crossed. It's about a virus that basically turns people into the Reavers from Firefly who talk like /b/tards. |

My favorite Ennis story will always be his Hellblazer story (barring any future work that knocks it out of the park, of course - but so far, that's the best he's had to offer.) |
|
GordonGuano
said @ 8:12pm GMT on 4th Jun
I'm finding a surprising amount of nuance (at least, for Ennis) in The Boys. If this were just a Rifle Brigade-type romp, The Frenchman would only get to say a catchphrase instead of actual dialogue. Of course, Darick Robertson's art has a lot to do with that. |
|
ENZ
said @ 12:14am GMT on 5th Jun
There is nuance in the main characters sure. In fact, I read somewhere that The Frenchman's dialog is actually intentionally sketchy. It's is rife with grammatical errors and the like. Combined with his backstory as told by him, it's suggested that he's not French at all, and his hiding a much darker past. The critique of Superheroes, on the other hand, is what lacks subtlety. When you flat out say that all superheroes are rapists and murderers, and all their heroic exploits is just propaganda so they can make millions selling comic books while hiding their real agenda of being primed up for a takeover of the military-industrial complex with metahumans instead of arms manufacturers, it's obvious he's got a huge chip on his shoulder for the genre. |

Have you been keeping up with the single issues? The latest storyline involves a group of supes loosely based on The Legion of Superheroes. They are an incredibly lame and innocent bunch of fuckups, but they have each other. I would never have expected poignance from Ennis, but if something awful happens to Bobby Badoing, I will actually feel bad. Sure, you can tell which supes Ennis has a real animus against, but I think it's cute more than anything ("so he has to make a giant green hand and wank off the Galaxius fella?"). It's not just Frenchie's dialogue that I think takes The Boys to a higher level than Ennis has gone before, though. His concern for The Female at not inconsiderable risk to himself made for an incredibly touching scene, enhanced by Robertson's gift for expressions. This might be the first work worthy of Robertson's talent since Transmetropolitan. |

Walking dead, in the reluctant words of my comics professor, is literally the walking dead. The comic has been running on empty for about 4 volumes now. And I say that as a huge fan of zombies AND kirkman. SPOILER ALERT. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED I think the end of the prison arc was the turning point for me, as well. Not so much that I disagree with killing off the baby and the wife, but that where the series went from there really wasted the potential of such a serious event. Hallucination phone anyone? Not to mention that the execution of.. Tyrell wasn't it? I can't remember his name, was completely paved under by more serious stuff. That makes sense for rick and his son, but even Michonne seems to have barely registered it. There are a lot of extraneous characters right now that would have benefited from story arcs told from their perspective, but instead of whittling the group down by killing off characters or splitting the group, they're just regrouped and replaced. The comic is really chafing and suffering under the large group dynamic. |

It also definitely doesn't help that Adlard isn't nearly as good at the nasty stuff as Tony Moore. Moore's gore is three times as convincing and greusome The panel where Rick's horse gets eaten in Atlanta had way more impact than the variety of beheadings and amputations that Adlard has drawn. Those bites from the first attack on the group were excellent. The guy with the ball cap with the bite on the wrist that exposed bone still sticks with me, Whereas I can barely remember the panel where Rick's hand gets chopped off. I've lent out books 1-10 so I can't get my bearings. |
