quote [ Pingtest.net is a free broadband quality analyzer designed to complement Speedtest.net. This troubleshooting tool grades your connection on how well it is likely to handle things like voice services (VoIP), streaming music or video, telecommuting or online gaming. ]
From Lifehacker...
[sci&tech] [by yeller@3:08amGMT] [+1] "You'll find an abundance of tools to test your internet connection speed but what if you want to test the quality and reliability of the connection? Pingtest gives you feedback on your connection. Pingtest allows you to select servers from around the world and test your connection to them. Your connection is graded based on packet loss, ping time, and a composite of all the ping tests called jitter—an indicator of how much variation exists in your ping times. If the screenshot above looks familiar that's because Pingtest is brought to you by the same company behind the wildly popular Speedtest—a web-based tool for checking the speed of your internet connection." |

and internet really is faster on the east coast... from what I experienced from someof the major providers it caps out around 2700KB/s sustaned with like a 3200KB/s burst in CA... where as in the NYC metro area I would get 3500KB/s sustained.... some of central NJ is terror tho... I imagine a lot of PA is as well. |

The results you get are going to vary, depending on which server it picks. If there's a server with a short, fast, reliable link to your ISP you'll get good ping results. On the other hand, if the server's hosted at an ISP that has a slow link to yours, or is experiencing issues, you're going to get crap results. Which is a long winded way of saying that this app is complaining about packet loss on my link, even though I've just sent a couple of hundred pings to SE and Google without any loss. |

I've been told that you should use the test that is recommended by your isp. The server in which you ping might not be accurate, based on the server distance....50 mi in my case.... Again, this is what I've been told by the tech support from my isp. Having said that. Here: Don't know why packet loss was unable to test...something about javascript.... |
