I guess it assumes that ratio of reported/unreported percentages stay the same. Are you suggesting that porn somehow prevents women from reporting rape? |

No. I'm not saying that. I'm saying that this study is basing its results on unreliable data. Let me explain. In Japan rape isn't reported as much as in other countries. Women often don't report rape because they fell shamed by it or fear criticism. Take train molestations for example. Lots of women on the train just bear it instead of bringing it to everyone's attention. Of all the girls I have dated over here in Japan, they have all been molested on the train when they are younger. In their own opinions they said "It is just a part of growing up for girls." So this study is trying to say that Japan's amount of pornography reduces rape cases. Let us assume that the pornography ratio in Japan rises every year. Then let us say that in year 1 there are 500 reported cases of rape in Japan. Unreported cases are say 2000. In year 1 there were 2500 rapes. Then in year 2, say there is 400 reported cases of rape, but the unreported rapes are say 2500. Rapes for year 2 are 2900. But from the point of this study the rapes from year 1 to year 2 declined. Thus there must be a correllation between the amount of pornography and the number of rapes. On the other hand, my argument is flawed because it is also possible that the amount of unreported rapes between year 1 and year 2 also declines. But since these rapes are unreported we will never know for certain. From my personal experience, I would say that Japan is pretty messed up when it comes to its sexuality. From my point of view, women are treated pretty badly over here. I wouldn't put it all the blame for the horrible sex crimes that happen over here, but the pornography over here I feel has decencitized many people into thinking that women are just objects to be played with and used. This study is old. Perhaps a new study is in order? This might be true for the 70's - 90's but from the 90's - today, things may have changed for the worst. |

( My sarcasm detector is confused, so I don't know what the proper response should be now. :{ ) Anyway, I would argue the opposite. The western world has made significant advances as a culture since the 1960s. While we there's still progress to be made, women are less objectified now than they were in the past. |
|

I would argue that women are just as objectified but now reciprocate the objectification. At least that seems true of the current 15-35 set. Part of this might be contributed to the mainstreaming of gay culture and commercialism as a whole (which has been objectifying young men, at least, since the invention of ads for men's underwear). |

I wasn't being sarcastic. I was being genuine. True, women are less objectified in the West. But this study is about Japan. What I was talking about was Japan. What I was trying to say was that Japan's inundation of pornography has objectified women even more and as a result sex crimes against women are seen as trivial. The more I think about it the more I disagree with this study. The data it is using is unreliable and they are only using Japan, Germany, and Denmark as models. They are also only considering the country compared to itself and its proliferation or pornography. I think a better study would have been to compare countries with an incredibly high amount of pornography and a countries with absolutely no pornography. Which country has a higher instance of sex crimes? Basically this study is trying to say that having a whole bunch of pornography creates an outlet for sexual desire and thus reduces sex crimes. I don't feel that this is the case. I think that having all this pornography in Japan is doing more harm than "good." |

You can't infer cause from correlation. Besides, these values are all useless anyway. Some might (e.g., Court, 1977) attribute the overall decrease in the number of sex crimes recorded in Japan as reflecting a public attitude change concomitant with the increasing availability of pornography. This is doubtful. While it might be true for relatively minor offenses as those of public indecency, rape has always been taken seriously. Indeed, one can argue that the inhibitions to reporting have decreased. The case can be made that the increased prevalence of SEM makes it easier for children or women or likely victims to be less inhibited in talking with their parents, partners or authorities about sexual matters; particularly about any sex offense. But yes, I agree with you - the data sets are bad, no matter how you look at it. You could also argue that the pornographic material available, depicting rape and whatnot, would make the victims feel ashamed, and thus not report it. You'll never get out of the "what if" situation. One thing's for sure though, the way rape is treated has changed; I doubt that sex education and support groups would make the number of unreported cases somehow higher than what was before. The laws regarding sex crimes has changed twice during the period mentioned (Sweden) - once in 1965, and once in 1985. The one in 1985 also added specific laws and punishments for crimes against children. There's been an additional change in 2005, but not as major as the one in 1985. A new study is definitely in order - rape is rising over here (Sweden). I doubt it's got to do with any change in pornographic material available though (if anything, it's more available these days than back in 1995); if I'd make a guess, I'd say economical situation and, yes, immigrants. Saying that, however, automatically make me a racist. BRÅ (Crime-preventing Council in Sweden; government-funded institution that does statistics and the like on crime) report a rise in rape crimes of 51% during the last 10 years. However, changes in laws contribute to these figures, in that more crimes are now classed as "sexual in nature"; the changes, however, were only introduced in 2005, so their impact on the figures is low. Looking at the numbers, and I'll spare you another wall-length post here (I hope), rape is 38% of all sex crimes reported (and they're counting on very high unreported figures). Seen from a broader range of time, the number of reported sex crimes is five times higher, from 2,800 reported crimes 1975 to roughly 12,500 crimes 2007. The development shows a clear rising trend with a particularly strong increase years 1992 and 1993. There definitely needs to be a new study. If you want to read more, here's the entire thing. In Swedish (and PDF) though. But you could look at the graphs, I suppose. The word you're looking for is "Sexualbrott", page 161. |

Saying that doesn't automatically make you a racist but you should include some reasoning if you're defining any social group. Read Terry Pratchett's Jingo for an example of the folly of the politically correct defense of 'everything foreign'. See things as they are, not as any group would have you see them. But back them up with arguments - a classic example (in the other direction) is here. There has been a recent rise in Sudanese immigration and there have been one or two moderately high profile news stories about teen crime and bashings involving Sudanese. The small-minded people interpret this directly as "the Sudanese are a bunch of criminals, why let them immigrate", but the official police statistics report that crime involving the Sudanese is actually lower than average. But if you have a reason for why it might be immigrants, then air it, don't hide it. If it is valid, then that issue can be looked at and addressed rather than swept under the politically correct rug. |
