I have basically no knowledge of Game Theory except a rudimentary intro to the Nash Equilibrium last semester so am after something that starts easily but touches on some of the funkyarse math i'm scared of.

The robbers don’t like that the Joker gets an equal share for doing unequal work. Their complaint raises the issue of fair division, which is central to game theory. Here's an example of my problem with game theory listed below. It's Why would the bank robbers have a problem with the guy who brought them all together and getting stuff underway getting a cut of the action? It seems that humans are reduced to a stylised stimulus/response for game theory. |

Also some books (some of which are suggested on that blog) that may be of use are: A Beautiful Math Game Theory at Work Thinking Strategically The first obviously being John Nash's work, but I can't quite remember the authors of the other two I'm afraid. The bit that's always annoyed me about game theory is that whenever I see people crapping on about it, they always leave out inconvenient bits about how the real world works in order to make their theory follow their logic more easily. It seems more like an academic parlour game than a useful discipline. |

As a philosopher, I would recommend David Lewis' work on convention: Convention. In terms of evolutionary biology and game theory: Evolution and the Theory of Games -- John Maynard Smith. A couple of textbooks that I've seen in the library: Games and Information -- Eric Rasmusen An Introduction to Game Theory -- Martin J. Osbourne A shorter one: A Primer on Game Theory -- Robert Gibbons. If you're familiar with the Oxford Short Introductions series, which can sometimes be quite good, don't be tempted to read Ken Binmore's volume on 'Game Theory'. He is a very good game theorist, and mathematician, but the pace of this book was all wrong. Seemingly crucial (but subtle) points were omitted, meaning the latter half of the text became increasingly hard to decipher. It is not, in fact, a good introduction. However, Binmore has written other works on game theory and you should surely take a look at some of them: Natural Justice is a game theoretic basis for morality. His two texts on game theory that I gather are aimed at undergraduates: Fun and Games Playing for Real. ... off the top of my head I can't think of any more. Hope that helped. |

A Course in Game Theory, by Martin J Osborne and Ariel Rubinstein. It starts with the basics (briefly) and extends to purely mathematical formations, and it's a fairly small book - not a lot of fluff. If you skip the math (and note, each chapter starts with sane explanation, and then goes to math & algorithmic analysis) you could get through it in a weekend with a passing familiarity. How bad is it that everyone on the Internet just gobbles up all the bandwidth they can whenever they want? i.e. how much better could it be if there was some sort of bandwidth god, providing optimal routing at all times? |

Might suggest Straffin's Game Theory and Strategy, as this was the text we used in my undergraduate class. Forget what level/audience this book was aimed towards, although I seem to recall it was basically well-written. I will say, though, it was a math class, not a straight econ/pol class. Best suggestion might be to see what textbook will be used for the course in advance and read ahead. |
