quote [ Tonight, ABC's 20/20 hit the streets looking for hookers & intending to cash in on the salacious sides of sex work ~ with Diane Sawyer as lead pimp, making her paycheck just another one of the profits earned from the poor, down-trodden, girls she herself called exploited. ]
A response from two sex workers regarding ABC's two-hour long 20/20 show, Prostitution in America: Working Girls Speak. Apparently Sawer can accept stomping on a kitten for cash, but not well-adjusted, drug-free, prostitute.

20/20 generally sucks ass, especially if Diane Sawyer is involved. Or John Stossel. This show was supposedly about prostitution, but should have been about drug addiction, runaway kids and shitty laws. |

It really pisses me off when sanctimonious types use the "x people are victims, even if they say they aren't. They're just too oppressed/uneducated/unenlightened to recognize it until I came along to tell them." Funnily enough, it's the same argument the Catholic church uses about abortion. In fact my feelings about abortion and sex work are similar: I'm not entirely personally comfortable with either, and would most likely not do either, but they're facts of human existence and banning them just makes things much, much shittier. When legal and regulated they can be made civilised, when banned there's just as much going on but it's far uglier. |

"x people are victims, even if they say they aren't" In this case, they can't 'say they aren't' because they're dead. The Catholic church hinges its argument on innocence-- which is how Catholics explain being against abortion and for the death penalty at the same time. I'm not looking for a flame war, just pointing out their position. |

Catholics aren't for the death penalty. The official Catholic word on the matter is that the death penalty is as much of a travesty as abortion. Some of the toughest, meanest, loudest anti-DP activists I've known have been nuns. It's just that in recent years American Catholic authorities, as part of their Devil's bargain with the evangelical Right, have decided abortion and gay marriage are more important than anything else the Catholic Church believes. |
