Who are we (through search)?

quote [ coma from fungal meningitis
overdose on diet pills
wife does books, wants a divorce but husband is 100% shareholder ]

I spent all night reading the stories told by these searches. I hate AOL for what they've done... but I'm fascinated by what it can tell us.

Peoples search queries/stories in extended (and for you naysayers, I know this site was just posted).

Many preteen nude searches after several queries for bible translations. Eventually devolves into incest, polygamy, & voyeurism.

Old, lonely, arthritic man looking for fat old female companion. Finally decides to buy a gun.

A girl is in an abusive relationship, gets pregnant, then an abortion, and struggles with the decision.

Probably the worst. Christian woman goes from being worried about genital itch, to yeast infection, to AIDS, then coma, & death.

Enough already, please.

I hate AOL for doing this, and I am starting to hate myself because I keep looking.

Okay, one question: if somebody is trying to look for ILLEGAL child porn, why type something like "illegal child porn" into the search window. Did they not get the face that it was ILLEGAL when that term was presented in thought, in action, AAAAND on the screen?

In fairness they are sitting at home (presumably) typing "Child Rape Stories" into their browser so I don't think they are displaying the usual subtlety attributed to internet paedophiles.

I have taken some comfort from the fact that since it became public knowledge that AOL fucked up and let this list out into the public domain this person has been shitting themselves constantly.

I think the US government will use this as a cornerstone in its reasons why America should become an Orwellian Run state. The fact remains we are animals at heart, bound into a society of norms which are far from normal. Yes its sad to read what folks are looking at but how often looking at those lists did you see websites or searches you've done yourself?

uh... i missed this somehow: how does anyone correlate the search with the user's real (or even screen) name? didn't they scramble that info? if not, who'd use it, where and how?
headlessfriar said @ 8:30am GMT on 10th Aug
In some of these people did ego surfing, and some even put their own social security numbers in as searches. It's not that the search log has a name attatched, it's that having all the searches of one person grouped together can give clues to the identity of the person. Or at least, that's what one article said. I haven't found anyone, but I have only read a few.
maryyugo said @ 10:56am GMT on 10th Aug
ok, i see. barring the social security number (although that could be anyone's and for any reason) or other specific identifying info, i still don't understand how a specific individual can be identified. has one been? were there consequences?
Rainbow Randolf said @ 3:01pm GMT on 10th Aug
It really isn't possible to do so...the only consequences I can see coming from this is an insinuation of someone doing these searches and the defamation of character that comes afterwards. People could be fired, left by their spouses, left out of wills, ect. Do they deserve it? Maybe. Would their employers/spouses/loved ones/friends have found this out anyways? Probably. Is it an incredible invasion of privacy to those who have done nothing wrong and are just trying to live out their lives in quiet dignity? Absolutely. If you were able to gather up the information of that 16 year old and discover that she was someone you knew but never told you about any of this, would you treat her differently? Definitely.

All of these AOL searches are very good at looking at the mind of the user. I mean if you search for whatever you're thinking about this is a map of a person's conscience for a 3 month time period. You can see how people learn more about a topic how their searches change.

And the other thing, how come I have not heard of this on any major news source past the initial release?
instasis said @ 1:15pm GMT on 10th Aug
