quote [ US President George W Bush has referred to the "war on terror" as "World War III" during a television interview. ]

[politics] [by wieder@11:32pmGMT] [+10 WTF] http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200605/s1632213.htm "In 2002, then-White House spokesman Ari Fleischer explicitly declined to call the hunt for Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda group and its followers "World War III"." I'm sure it's all just a biiiig misunderstanding and it will be cleared up very soon so I can go back to thinking about the porn posts above and below this one. |

but WWII was a proper sequel. see, in WWI england, france and russia (and later the US and other former colonial allies) battled germany and austria. in WWII it's the same alliances (plus a few newcomers to both sides, and again, the US to join later) battling over direct ramifications of the outcome of the last war (namely unreasonable sanctions against the losers that allowed a facist regime to come to power by exploiting the discontent engendered by them). also [SPOILER WARNING], in the second world war we learn that hitler is actually churchill's father. now they always used to say that a war with soviet russia would be WWIII, and that would be fair since any such conflict would have been rooted in the events and outcomes of the two previous world wars, and since once again alliances would be more or less similar. and there would be ewoks. the "war on terror" is not WWIII. sure, it does have some remote roots in the first world war, but I think it's actually more rooted in proxy wars with the soviets than it is in the treatment of the middle east in the aftermaths of WWI and WWII. it's just too many times removed to really be called a proper sequel. sure, if the wars were a fictional series, then you could get away with calling it a sequel, but in history practically everything is connected in one way or another, so I think a stricter deffinition of sequel is called for. I mean, the war on terror has about as much claim to sequence as the korean and vietnam wars. so if were gonna say that this is part of the World War saga, then this would actually be part five at least. but bush doesn't know all this backstory, he just wants a nice even trilogy. and a cabinet full of Jar-Jars. |

Becase the Australian Broadcasting Corporation is running out of Government Funding perhaps. My gut tells me that's because of the internal politics; like the states and territories (of Australia), it's run by the other guys (Labour party, not the incumbent Liberal party) |
|
captainstubing

Your gut is wrong in this case. ABC is federal and has been funded (grudgingly) by the Libs for the past decade. The states have no role at all in the ABC. The government claim it has a bias against them...which is exactly what the previous Labor government used to claim. Oppositions love the ABC because they call governements to account and governments hate it for the same reason. |

America won't fight the EU. In fact, I don't think there'll be alarge scale war for a while. India and Pakistan might blow up (literally), the Middle East's leaders are too concerned with filling their pockets to have a concerted war against anyone (thought that might change in a while, as the US's star dims, an Israel is left standing there going "oh! oh! oh!"). But China is rising by performing economic juju on the US, vampirical style, so a war would fuck that one right up. The EU isn't a bloc that can even agree on fishing rights, let alone a concerted military effort. I reckon the West will just fade into a peaceful and successful irrelevancy as a series of localised wars splutter in and out, occasionally donate some troops. Man, that was optimistic!
