quote [ "South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem — and he's cashed plenty of checks — with our show making fun of Christians." ]
This sucks. I like Isaac Hayes. Given his history though I gotta side with Matt and Trey. Instead of treating it the same as everything else the show (and he himself) has made fun of, he's taking it personally. Respect--

Found that a while ago in a post on Slashdot, and it seems to fit: The way to deal with superstition is not to be polite to it, but to tackle it with all arms, and so rout it, cripple it, and make it forever infamous and ridiculous. Is it, perchance, cherished by persons who should know better? Then their folly should be brought out into the light of day, and exhibited there in all its hideousness until they flee from it, hiding their heads in shame. True enough, even a superstitious man has certain inalienable rights. He has a right to harbor and indulge his imbecilities as long as he pleases, provided only he does not try to inflict them upon other men by force. He has a right to argue for them as eloquently as he can, in season and out of season. He has a right to teach them to his children. But certainly he has no right to be protected against the free criticism of those who do not hold them. He has no right to demand that they be treated as sacred. He has no right to preach them without challenge. Did Darrow, in the course of his dreadful bombardment of Bryan, drop a few shells, incidentally, into measurably cleaner camps? Then let the garrisons of those camps look to their defenses. They are free to shoot back. But they can't disarm their enemy. -- H. L. hasn't south park taken some shots at scientology prior to that ep? granted, less direct things such as "blainetology", which had more to do with the heavens gate cult than scientology. but when they're drawing a similarity between heavens gate and scientology, seems to me that would have been a fine time for him to get sand in his vagina. oh wait, here's the difference: that was nothing more than idle ad-hominem, where as the trapped in a closet ep actually went after the ideas, which anyone as calculating and cynical as the church of scientology knows is much more dangerous. why someone as insecure as a scientologist would have anything to do with matt and trey in the first place is beyond me. |

Did that bother you? IH: Well, I talked to Matt and Trey about that. They didn't let me know until it was done. I said, "Guys, you have it all wrong. We're not like that. I know that's your thing, but get your information correct, because somebody might believe that shit, you know?" But I understand what they're doing. I told them to take a couple of Scientology courses, and understand what we do. [Laughs.]" |

I loved it at the beginning when it came on in 97 but I haven't watched it in a while because for the past season or so , the shows right wing subtext is becoming unbearable. I don't blame Haye's for wanting to leave a show which many people really don't find funny anymore and kind of insulting. Maybe this is just a convenient way for him to quit? Yeah its there, South Park is basically a morality play whith the "I've learned something today" format. for example: In the episode where the Tweaks try to stop the competing coffee chain from moving in by starting anti-big-business propaganda and then he "learns" in the end that the bbig comanies are the biggest because they have the best products and he gets a job at the shop. The episode where big gay al gets kicked out of scouts and then agrees in the end that they should have the right to kick out homosexuals because it is a private club. Those are old episodes More recently: transgender people being portrayed as monsters with kyle's dad going "transpecies" and kyle going "transracial" I could go of if I had a decent memory. Point is that that to me at least the show seems unbalanced toward being a little old fashioned on its world views. |
