quote [ Scientists have constructed the world's smallest car. It has a chassis, axles and a pivoting suspension, the wheels are spheres of pure carbon.
The whole car is 4 nanometers across. That's slightly wider than a strand of DNA. A human hair is about 80,000 nanometers thick. ] [sci&tech] [by eskimonoise@5:09pmGMT] [+10 Good] |

Every major technological advancement in history, including the computer you are using to read this comment, is the product of scientists with far too much time on their hands. Most of us would not be alive if not for the accomplishments of medical researchers with far too much time on their hands. |

But this isn't science for the sake of science. It's doing routine chemistry in a gimicky way to get money to do research that is completely pointless. Any moron could make a nano-scale molecule, throw it on a surface, and push it around. Waste of resources and lab space... |

Molecular-scale vehicles are not pointless gimmicks. This is an artifical version of the sort of natural machinery that moves chemicals around inside cells. If we can get this sort of thing working, we can make nanofactories. |

Ok, the distance between a single Carbon-Carbon bond in general is: 1.54 Angstroms, the distance between a double Carbon-Carbon bond (p-hybridized) is around 1.31 Angstroms. 10 Angstroms = 1 nanometer 4 nanometers = 40 Angstroms So, on average there are only around 27 single carbon-carbon bondlengths or around 30 double-carbon-carbon bondlengths to the whole width of this "car". i.e, the car is only 28 atoms wide That's pretty freakin' small. When you consider the width of a human hair is approx. 30 micrometers, that's 300,000 angstroms, or 30,000 nanometers... 750 of these cars could sit side-by-side on one strand of your hair. Alternatively, if we take the Dodge Viper (width of 75 inches or so): the same number of vipers side by side would be 0.89 miles, or 1.43 kilometers wide!! [mind you a viper is pretty wide as far as a car goes] |

I could make exactly the same claim. I mean, who's gonna prove me wrong? ME: I've created the world's smallest statue of Shirley MacLaine. I carved it out of a single quark. YOU: What? Where? ME: Right there. *points* YOU: Dude, there's nothing there. ME: Yes, it's right fucking there. Of course, it's far too small to be seen with the naked eye, or even the most powerful electron microscope. YOU: Bullshit. ME: Don't be a micro MacLaine hater. |
